As a person who is not raised in english speaking environment, it's kinda hard to master this language fast enough. Some people took several years of time to eventually got to speak english to a certain standard. But most of the people still cant speak proper if not fluent english after several years passed by.
In Malaysia, kids are started to learn english as early as standard 1. To total up english lessons until someone finished form 5, it is 11 years. Literally, 11 years is a long time. Enough time to durians tree to produce it second season of fruiting. But why, most of people still cant speak better at least, speak simple english with ease.
I'm not condemning anybody or any education system, I'm talking about me.
I came across a phrase "If you are not interested, nothing is interesting". So that's it. Maybe the interest not there. Maybe the passions not there. Maybe the desire not there.
So after all tangled thoughts and wasted time, I am concluding three major factors that retarding my mission to become a fluent english speaker.
1. LACK OF SPEAKING PRACTICES
Practices make perfect. Keep practicing because its only gets better.
No one can ever be good at baking a cake without trying to bake a cake. and it took several times of failure before can serve a good one. And there's a lot types of cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and bread she needs to learn to at least can be called " she is good at baking".
Same goes with speaking english. If we only know yes and no when answering question, its not good enough. How to practice? I am ashamed and dont have partner.
Try to speak to yourself. Try to explain what your emotions for the day, what have you saw, what bothers you, what makes you happy, and anything you can relate to.
Example:
1. "Oh, the cloud is showing a sign of raining, I better prepare to close all the windows. I hope it didn't last long unless my clothes wont be drying."
2. "It's cloudy today. I better closed all the windows and take my laundry unless it will get wet."
I actually dont know if these two sentences make any different but what I am trying to say is you can talk about anything to start speak english and try different sentences that match your mood that day. Notice that if you have wide range of vocabulary you will sound more relax than speaking like you writing a formal letter.
2. Too much resources.
To speak good english, you can start with simple english. Try to memorize sentences.
Example:
Q: What would you like to be when you grow up?
(What are your ambition?)
(What do you want to be when you grow up?)
A: I would like to be a farmer
I want to be an engineer.
I want to be a film director.
In daily life we could use question like, "What do you want to have for dinner?", How's your day today, or why are you crying? just memorize that and use it when the time is appropriate.
Most of us only focusing on upgrading our vocabulary instead of upgrading our speaking skills. That's how you end up speechless or stutter when talking to other people but as a matter of fact you have lots to say.
3. GRAMMAR MESSED UP.
They say you dont need a good grammar when talking english just say anything in order to practice. For me that's a lie. You at least need to master simple grammar, present tense, past tense and future tense to make right sentences. And from there you will gradually learn to make the right sentences and gain confident every time you speak rather than confusing what grammar to use in the sentence and make you distracted all the time.
I still struggling for #3 factor as much you can see in this whole writing there are a lots of grammar mistakes here and there. But, I hope this writing can help anybody out there who want to speak good english to keep practising and avoid confusion why on earth we still cannot speak good english.xoxo
